Terry grew up in the small Victorian country town of Dimboola. He excelled in sport in general and played for and coached Dimboola in both football and cricket. He represented the Wimmera in football, and when he moved to Melbourne he played in the Essendon District Football League.

Terry also excelled in rowing, representing Victoria several times, winning State and National titles. In the Diamond Valley he played for and coached both Diamond Creek and Greensborough in cricket.
